About the organisation

He Waka Tapu is a Kaupapa Māori organisation who have been supporting individuals and the community for 30 years. He Waka Tapu works to increase the health and wellbeing of Whānau.

This is an exciting opportunity for a proactive person with an understanding of the concept of Whānau Ora. You will take a role in an important service to guide and encourage Whānau to reach their goals towards wellbeing.

About the role

  • Provide comprehensive AOD assessments to whaiora, developing tailored treatment and rocovery plans that meet their needs.
  • Support and/or lead group facilitation for programmes in the community and residential AOD services
  • Facilitate group individual therapy sessions, focusing on evidence-based interventions.
  • Engage with whaiora in a compassionate and non-judgmental manner, fostering a safe and supportive environment.
  • Involve the whaiora and their whānau (where indicated) in the development of the recovery plan goals and objectives.
  • Advocate where appropriate for the whaiora recovery needs to reflect choice and to challenge stigma and discrimination.
  • Work in partnership with other He Waka Tapu services to ensure Whaiora needs are met through the efficient coordination of services that support the whaiora pathway to wellness.

Skills and experience

  • A relevant qualification in allied health, Psychology, Counselling, or a related field.
  • Experience working within the AOD sector, preferably within a Kaupapa māori environment.
  • Experience in conducting AOD assessments and delivering therapeutic interventions.
  • Strong facilitation skills with the ability to engage and motivate.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a genuine passion for helping others.
  • Ability to work autonomously and as part of a collaborative team.
  • Knowledge of harm reduction approaches and a commitment to continuous learning.
  • Experience in establishing effective working relationships with individuals, their whānau and other key stakeholders.
  • Alignment to He Waka Tapu values and core principles and a commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi.
  • Commitment and/or experience working in a Whānau Ora approach.
  • Current full driver’s licence.
